Mbelei Secondary School Students Take Action in Conservation Efforts

On August 6, 2024, SEPA, in collaboration with the environment teacher, the school’s project teacher, and the Shule Salama coordinator at Mbelei Secondary School, conducted a short seminar with some members of the school’s environmental club. The seminar, titled “NAFASI YA MWANAFUNZI KATIKA KUTUNZA MAZINGIRA” (The Role of a Student in Environmental Conservation), aimed to raise awareness and emphasize the students’ roles and responsibilities in environmental protection and conservation at school, home, and their communities.

Students are seen as great ambassadors of the environment, making it crucial to educate them about pressing environmental issues such as environmental pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Miss Aneth Ndyetabula, the chairperson of SEPA, urged the students to be patriots and role models in conserving and protecting the environment. She encouraged them to embody SEPA’s motto, “Save Earth, Save Life,” in all their actions, no matter where they are. During the seminar, students were divided into three groups based on their declarations:

1. Taking care of the avocado trees brought by SEPA to the school.

2. Composting biodegradable solid wastes instead of burning them to prevent air pollution.

3. Restoring and planting Bermuda grasses on eroded areas and areas prone to erosion around the school’s campus. The Bermuda grass seeds will be brought by SEPA

Each group is responsible for one specific task but is encouraged to engage in other groups’ activities as well. These environmental club activities are expected to boost the morale of their fellow students in conservation efforts. We are excited to see the anticipated results and plan to conduct various environmental projects to ensure sustainability at Mbelei Secondary School and other schools.

This proactive approach is a fantastic way to involve students in environmental conservation. Special thanks to the spirit of the environment, project teachers, and Shule Salama coordinator, soon the declarations will turn into reality.
